La Esquina Lucha Libres

The La Esquina “Lucha Libres” soccer team is owned and operated by the genial Serge Becker, a Swiss-born artist and impresario with a legendary pedigree in New York’s art and entertainment world, downtown division.

Becker’s hands-off European style of management seems to be working just as well for this dynamic squad as it does for his iconoclastic restaurant La Esquina in Soho, a beacon of downtown dining and style since it opened in 2006. ?

The Esquina team is drawn from a talented pool of the restaurant’s staff, from busboys to line cooks to doormen and dishwashers. The Lucha Libres were champions of their local Queens soccer league last year, and for the past three years they have been competing ferociously in the Adidas Fanatic Tournament against dozens of other local restaurant teams.

Last year they made it to the finals, and this time around they are determined to improve on that performance and proudly bring the trophy home to Kenmare Street.
