Diner Old Boys win adicup NYC

The Diner Old Boys reclaim their title and set out in hopes for a victory at adidas’ adiCup, 2010 FIFA World Cup™ edition global finals.

A record 28 teams turned out at Pier 40 on Saturday to compete for the NYC title at adiCup, 2010 FIFA World Cup™ edition, adidas’ 9th installment of its annual FANATIC soccer tournament.

More than 2300 football ‘fanatics’ were in attendance cheer all participating squads on. All enjoyed the modest 76F weather, a hot spread delivered by Brother Jimmy’s BBQ and over 7,680 beers throughout the day. Combine that with sunshine, fresh tunes by Neil Armstrong and the spirit of the UEFA Champion’s League™ finale, and you’ve got another successful year of soccer fun.

Returning teams such as Chinatown Soccer Club, Freemans Sporting Club, Opening Ceremony, Paper Shredders and Vice FC had it out with some fresh faces, like newcomers ACE & CO, Giant Step, The V Team and The Standard Hotel

But it was veterans and two-time champions, Diner Old Boys, that took the coveted adiCup trophy and tickets to compete at the global finale at adidas’ headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany. After winning the 1-0 final match against Supreme Records, Diner Old Boys return to the global finale to represent the U.S. against the winners from adiCup tourneys in Tokyo, Berlin and London, for a shot at a trip to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ finale in Johannesburg, South Africa, just four years after their last adiCup win scored them seats at the finale in Berlin.

As usual, special prizes were also awarded to the runners up, as well as to the teams with the best team spirit and best custom jersey. Each player from Supreme Records will summer in style, having won the special adiCup 2010 USA pack that includes shoes, a jersey and sport bag designed by Arkitip Magazine and UNDFTD. The always team-spirited PSYOP team and second consecutively best dressed Opening Ceremony will enjoy shopping sprees at the adidas Originals store in NYC.

Hosted by adidas, FANATIC was created in 2002 as an immersive experience of soccer and community in New York. adidas sought out an eclectic mix of ‘football’ enthusiasts- an assortment of teams made up of originative activators in the creative scene- to re-engage the culture in downtown New York with the sport of soccer. Since its inception, FANATIC has grown with every passing year, drawing an abundance of teams vying to compete and crowds of soccer ‘fanatics’ in the thousands as spectators. In addition, the tournament was interpreted on a global scale in select cities every four years during FIFA World Cup™, and adiCup was born.
